General Information about Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is the accumulation of fluids in the ventricles and occurs in the deepest part of the brain. The ventricles bloat in size because of the fluids and this puts intense pressure on the brain. The fluid that generally is in the brain and the spinal cord is known as cerebrospinal fluid. When this cerebrospinal fluid increases in quantity, the tissues get damaged and this dysfunctionality of the brain is termed as hydrocephalus. It mainly happens to old people who are above sixty years and infants. Hydrocephalus gives rise to many impairments and can be treated with surgery.

Symptoms of hydrocephalus

In children, the signs of hydrocephalus include:
# An abnormally large-sized head
# A bulging spot on the upper part of the head
# Frequent seizures and vomiting
# Sleepiness and droopy eyes
# Blurred vision
# Not enough strength and muscles
In case of aged persons, the symptoms of hydrocephalus consist of:
# A repeated urge to urinate, signifying an inability to control the bladder
# A loss in memory and loss of rational thinking
# Facing problem in walking with a heavy feeling of pressure in the feet
# Weak balance and coordination

Causes of hydrocephalus

The cerebrospinal fluid interconnects the channels by passing through the ventricles lined at the side of the brain. The fluid basically keeps the brain buoyant and cushions the brain from injury. The fluid increases due to an obstruction which blocks the fluid to pass from one ventricle to another. This makes the fluid to accumulate in one ventricle, resulting in bulging of the ventricle.

If there is less absorption of the fluid, then there might be inflammation of the tissues. In a few cases, this fluid is generated inside the body faster in compared to its absorption.
